Mahé, Praslin, La Digue: the crossing comes first.

★★★★★★★★★★5.0· 93 travellers on the busiest crossing

Cat Cocos covers Mahé to Praslin in about an hour; the Cat Rose picks up the Praslin–La Digue leg in fifteen minutes. Seats thin out around holidays and the last boats leave earlier than you expect — lock the crossings, then build the islands around them.

Only here

Three things only the Seychelles can show you.

Palm beaches you can find across the Indian Ocean. A palm that grows wild almost nowhere else on earth, giant tortoises loose on the sand and a granite islet the size of a garden — those belong to this archipelago alone.

A UNESCO forest

The Coco de Mer

The coco de mer grows wild in only two places on earth, and Vallée de Mai on Praslin is the one you can walk through. Its palms carry the heaviest seed of any plant — over twenty kilos — under a canopy UNESCO listed back in 1983. The loop takes a shaded hour; good guides also find you the black parrot the brochures never promise.

Wild, not fenced

The Curieuse Tortoises

Curieuse held a leper colony once; today it belongs to a few rangers and a few hundred Aldabra giant tortoises that wander the beach like slow furniture. Boats cross from Praslin in around twenty minutes, and most trips pair the island with a creole barbecue and a snorkel stop on the way home.

The postcard stop

St Pierre Islet

A knot of pink granite boulders and a dozen palms off Praslin’s north coast — St Pierre is barely an acre, and it is the snorkel stop every boat day fights over. Hawksbill turtles graze the reef around it, and mornings get glass water before the day boats arrive.

The island question

Which island gets your best day?

The Mahé day

Markets, mountain passes, a late swim

Full day· from $135· driver options

Victoria’s market before the heat, the Sans Souci road over the spine of the island, then Beau Vallon or the Anse Major trail to finish. Mahé rewards a car and a driver who knows where the viewpoints hide.

The Praslin day

Vallée de Mai, then Anse Lazio

Full day· from $76· small group

The morning under the coco de mer canopy, the afternoon on the beach half the country’s postcards are shot on. Do the forest first — the light under the palms is better before noon.

The La Digue day

Ferry over, bicycle everywhere

15-min crossing· from Praslin· hold the boat back

La Digue runs on bicycles and ferry timetables. Cross on the Cat Rose from Praslin, ride to Anse Source d’Argent while the tide is low, and reserve your return seat — the late boats fill first.

The boat-day ritual

A Seychelles boat day ends in barbecue smoke.

The pattern is fixed and nobody complains: a morning snorkel off St Pierre or Moyenne, then the crew beaches the boat and grills fish and chicken over coals. The creole barbecue is half the reason to book a full day on the water — these trips run it best.

The big island

Mahé is more than the airport island.

Cross the Sans Souci pass and the capital shrinks behind you: tea fields, the Anse Major coast trail, and the Ste Anne Marine Park scattered green across the bay below Victoria. Most visitors give Mahé a day; the ones who give it three stop apologising for it.

Pick a kind of day

Six doors into the Seychelles’ water.

Nearly everything worth booking here starts at a jetty. These are the six kinds of day travellers plan whole trips around — each one ranked, priced and reviewed.

Money first

What a day out costs in the Seychelles.

The islands are not cheap, but the water is free once you’re on it. Every reviewed tour, sorted by what it actually costs per person.

Under $100
29 tours

Ferry crossings, semi-submarine windows on the marine park, and the half-day snorkel runs out of Praslin.

$100–200
49 tours

The classic full days: Curieuse with barbecue, Ste Anne with lunch, a guided lap of Mahé.

$200 and up
32 tours

Private boats and drivers — a charter with its own skipper costs less split four ways than most people guess.

Praslin

Praslin packs the whole country into one day.

The forest that made the island famous sits ten minutes from the jetty the Curieuse boats leave from. Sleep here two nights and you can do the coco de mer, the tortoises, the barbecue and Anse Lazio without ever hurrying.

Read the wind

In the Seychelles, the trade winds pick your coast.

From May to September the southeast trades roughen the windward shores; November to March, the calmer northwest season glasses the water off Beau Vallon and Anse Lazio. Boats still go out almost every day — skippers simply swap which side of the islands they anchor on. Booking the sheltered coast beats cancelling.
